COMMUNITIES

Meet the Batwa community

In the areas surrounding the dense Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, lives one of the most unique and equally fascinating tribes of the world. The Batwa pygmies, a group considered ‘primitive’ or ‘uncivilized’ by outsiders and yet possess a rich culture and history that is deeply intertwined with Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Their community consists of hunter-gatherers who are believed to be the first human beings that called Bwindi home and they date back to almost 10,000 years ago. For centuries, the Batwa expertly navigated the forest’s dense vegetation and used its resources to sustain themselves. They had and continue to have an intimate knowledge of the flora and fauna species in the forest and consider it a sacred place.

Bwindi Impenetrable

Bwindi Forest remains one of the last remaining safe habitats for this magnificent beast. At least 500 mountain gorillas, which is half the entire world’s population

Murchison Falls

The park is more popular for housing the world’s most powerful falls, the great River Nile flows through a narrow gorge only 7 meters (23 ft) wide before plunging 43 meters (141 ft).

Queen Elizabeth

The  park is known for its abundant wildlife, including African elephant, African buffalo, Ugandan kob, Hippopotamus, Topi, Waterbuck, Warthog, Nile crocodile, leopard, spotted hyena, chimpanzee and lion.

Kibale Forest

The park is popular for its primates. It is home to over 13 primates species and therefore has a diversity of primates that is hardly seen anywhere else in Africa
