Murchison Falls National Park houses different flora and fauna species including 144 mammal species, 556 birds, 51 reptiles, and 51 amphibians. The park also has the largest population of Nile Crocodiles that are known to grow beyond 5m in length. Frequently seen mammals include buffaloes, Jackson hartebeests, antelopes, lions, kobs, giraffes, hyenas, bushbucks, and warthogs among others. They are widely spread all over the Savannah grasslands, grazing or hunting for prey. The park is also a bird sanctuary, housing different bird species like the dwarf kingfisher, Goliath heron, white-thighed hornbill and great blue turaco.
The park however is more popular for housing the world’s most powerful falls. Considered the main tourist attraction in the park, the Murchison falls contribute to the park’s popularity and ensure it receives the most visitors in a year. At Murchison Falls, the great River Nile flows through a narrow gorge only 7 meters (23 ft) wide before plunging 43 meters (141 ft).
The park is dissected into the northern and southern parts by the Victoria Nile. The northern part of the park is covered in savannah and woodland vegetation while the south is covered by Budongo tropical forest. Popular activities include game drives, night drives, boat cruises to the delta and Murchison Falls waterfall, nature walks, bird watching and chimp tracking in the dense Budongo forest.
